5 1/2 months ago we came to India! – Lea Benz & Hannah Ahland, Germany

5 1/2 months ago we came to India! – Lea Benz & Hannah Ahland, Germany

Our journey began in a very traditional family. Our host parents, our 5 host brothers and the rest of the family made us feel at home there very quickly. Through them, we learned about Indian culture and we soon became a part of their family. During the weeks, we are working in a big animal shelter with dogs, cats, horses, cows, goats, sheep, donkeys, birds and pigs. Our main tasks are horse, goat and puppy feeding, horse washing, skin care…

Traveling with a beautiful purpose – Aarti Polavarapu, Outbound participant

Traveling with a beautiful purpose – Aarti Polavarapu, Outbound participant

If someone asks me to define my experience in Greenland, I believe these 5 words would perfectly encapsulate my 5 weeks spent there. Being an Indian who grew up in Delhi, I’ve grown accustomed to having different seasons, but never any snow. Naturally, learning about the world’s biggest island 80 percent of which is permanently covered with ice, was fascinating for me. When I heard my friend from London talk about how she volunteers during summers to work with the…

Experience during my 3 months in India – Merle Feindt, Germany: Project – Slum Teaching and Development

Early in September 2019, I arrived in Mangalore to attend the FSL India orientation week at the Training Centre in Kundapur, before I would continue my travel to Bangalore to settle at my project. In the early morning, I was warmly welcomed by several children who just attended their daily prayer and yoga session. I was not surprised by their hospitality towards me, but still, being welcomed like that gave me a feeling of comfort. The shelter I stayed at…

Out of the Rat Race! – Manisha Madhukar, Outbound Participant – Weltwärts Programme, Germany

Out of the Rat Race! – Manisha Madhukar, Outbound Participant – Weltwärts Programme, Germany

“Okay, but are you getting paid?” Was one of the first (or easily top 5) questions that were fired at me upon learning that I am volunteering for a year. And for good reason. Coming from a country that often encourages competition and clarity in spheres of education and jobs, climbing up the career ladder seems to take the forefront. That’s why I found it difficult to explain my cloudy, but intuitive choices. But the truth is, yes, I do…

Winter Camp at Varanashi Organic Farms – Miriam Seffers and Selin Yenice, Germany

Winter Camp at Varanashi Organic Farms – Miriam Seffers and Selin Yenice, Germany

From the 10th-20th October, we worked with 20 German volunteers on Varanashi Organic Farms. Our work was to fertilise different trees: cacao, nutmeg, arecanut and coconut trees. We fed the plants with 45 tons of manure and covered 15 acres with it. We worked in teams of 5-10. So, we split the work in different steps. That was very good and effective. Some people filled the buckets, some drove the trollies with the buckets to the plants and some put…
