Name of volunteer: Miss Maria

Country: Mexico

Duration: June and July 2012

Project / Field: MVP / Regular Teaching

I would like to share about Miss Maria and her work in a regular teaching in Model Village Project. She hails from Mexico, came to India for a two-month volunteering in a teaching project facilitated by FSL-India. She worked in a government school in Chennai. She really impressed people by her hard-work with the children. She taught spoken English, mathematics, computer, rhymes, songs in English and many games. All these activities, she did innovatively and her interactive session with children through games she could make them understand the concept of Maths. Now children are able to speak, understand simple words in English, frame sentences and recite English rhymes.

She always carried educational materials with her. She used to write English words on the charts and help the children learn the meanings of vocabularies. She also taught on how to form sentences in English. She used to ask children to speak in English. Now even the local teachers could communicate in English with the children.

Not only did the children learn and benefit from her service, but also the teachers who learnt a lot from her methods of teaching and the difference between Mexico and Indian education system. She encouraged teachers to stop beating the children while teaching.

Even though she had difficulty in communicating with Kinder Garden children, she never used to complain. She loved to face challenges and overcome with appropriate solutions to problems. It really impressed others and by seeing her work, the neighboring school teachers request FSL-India for volunteers.

I would really like to appreciate her volunteering work in India with the children, punctuality, way she adopted the local situation, ways of communication, the accent and sign language she used with the teachers and children. I would say that she was one of the best volunteers that FSL-India ever had.

I would like to thank Miss Maria for her excellent work in India.
