Olive Ridley Sea Turtle nests at Kodi Beach, Kundapur
For several years now, we have been witnessing a decrease in the number of sea turtle nesting sites on our protected beach of 60Kms along the coastal belt of the Arabian Sea, in Kundapura, Udupi Dist. We are thrilled to announce that in 2021, as a new year gift, we’ve received good news from our local fishermen contact persons who are temporary guards protecting the 5 km stretch of beach. On January 21, 22, 23 and 26, we found Sea Turtle nests in Kodi beach, followed by a fifth nest last evening in Gopadi around 5KMs apart! All these nests were not relocated, except the first one that we received on 21’st Jan. Each of these clutches are between 80 to 130 eggs. After precisely 52 days hatchlings will emerge early in the morning.
Each nest is now protected by our Local fisherman, the Karnataka Forest Department. Volunteers of Clean Kundapur Project who take up regular beach cleaning activities along this stretch of beach also will be monitoring. Surprisingly, both these beaches are covered by Clean Kundapur Volunteers. Hoping to get good news from other areas too! Our thanks to all those who have supported us in the Sea Turtle Conservation project which started in 2005.
