Our Experience with the Sea Turtles – Linda Pederzolli, Italy & Manjunath B, Field Officer, FSL-India

In the month of March 2019, FSL-India staff got a surprise: a sea turtle nest at Trasi, along the Kundapura shoreline.

Everybody felt so happy and since the beginning, the local fishermen, as well as the community, along with the Forest Department, worked together for taking care of the nest.

A strong hatchery was built around the nest and informative sign boards were hung up, in order to protect the eggs.

We, FSL-India’s long term volunteers along with Venkatesh, FSL-India’s Senior Program Manager and Manjunath B, went together to visit the hatchery. It was an occasion for us to discover more about the sea turtle’s life and the hatching process.

Finally, on 1st May 2019, during the morning, many baby turtles started coming out from their eggs. Everybody went to visit the baby turtles. It was a wonderful moment for us, as none of us had ever seen such amazing creatures before!

We, FSL-India’s volunteers collaborated with the community and the staff in taking care of the turtles and checking out whenever new babies were coming out from the sand.

We also could help in releasing the babies and looked at those small creatures running fast towards the ocean. It was a magical experience!
