FSL-Work Camps in August 2010

1. Place: Bangalore Theme: Social/Kids

Number of Volunteers: 14 (France, Spain, Greece,South Korea and Italy)

This work camp was conducted with an organization called Sama foundation. The volunteers worked in an informal school run by Sama foundation. Total numbers of children in the school are 40. (Boys-15, Girls-25) The children are between 8 to 14 years of age.

Volunteers also did some renovation work in the school. They painted the wall, drew educational charts on the walls to promote awareness of health and Hygiene, family planning and environment awareness.The volunteers did  country presentation for the children so that they could learn  few aspects about other cultures.

2. Place: Kundapur. Theme: Kids/Environment

Number of Volunteers: 14 (France, Italy,Spain, Korea,Russia)

The volunteers worked in 2 different schools, Anjuman school and Chikensal primary school. The volunteers helped in the renovation work and on the second week of the camp they helped in cleaning the school garden of Chaithanya special school. The volunteers did country presentation for the children as part of the Inter cultural exchange. Volunteers had opportunity to visit interesting places around Kundapur during the cultural visit and Eco-tourism boat trip.

3. Place: Coorg. Theme: Tribal/Environment

Number of Volunteers: 17(France,Korea,Italy,Spain,Lithuania, Belgium,Germany)

During this work camp volunteers worked in Morarji Desai residential school Kushalnagar which is run by the social welfare department for the local tribal kids. Volunteers helped in the gardening work and on the second week of the camp they helped in cleaning the school playground and planting trees at the school campus. The other activities of the work camp were visit to coffee plantation and local families, Tibetan colony and monasteries,elephant camp and nature camps. Cultural evening was organized by which kids  got  chance to know the culture and tradition of  different countries.

4. Place: Daramsala . Theme: Tibetan culture/ kids/Environment

Number of Volunteers: 19 (France, UK,Germany,Singapore, Spain, South Korea

Main focus of this camp to support Yongling and Tibetan welfare school in Mcleodganj by doing some renovation and betterment work. The volunteers painted the school and added some creative material to the classrooms. During the afternoon, volunteers had  chance to interact with the Tibetan population and the youth in particular. With the help of the Tibetan Welfare office, there were visits to the main places of interest in the town of McLeodGanj, to get to know more in detail about the situation of the Tibetans nowadays. Furthermore volunteers will had chance to meet the Tibetan youth and discuss a number of issues and topics. On the third week of the work camp, volunteers participated in 4 day trekking program around the beautiful mountain ranges of Dharamkot and Triund

5. Place: Kerala . Theme: Yoga/Ayurveda/Kids

Number of Volunteers: 14 (Turkey, Italy, Spain, South Korea, Belgium,Germany,Taiwan)

The volunteers participated in learning the Basics of Yoga and Ayurveda in these three weeks of the work camp. Everyday there were topics covered by a professional master (the person in charge of yoga and Ayurveda classes) which was practiced by the volunteers in the mornings.

Apart from this, volunteers helped in conducting classes at St.Mary’s school.  Volunteers helped this school by simple renovation work,interacting with the children, teaching them basic English and Mathematics, Health and Hygiene awareness, environmental protection etc.


Happy Move – Intercultural Activities

Besides social development, the other objective of the Happy Move Camp is to facilitate Inter-cultural Learning between Korean youth and the local community. On the first day volunteers are given a traditional Indian welcome with bindi, jasmine flower garlands and they get to eat dinner on a banana leaf. The Korean volunteers have an opportunity to visit the houses and spend time with the local community and learn about their culture. To facilitate interaction between the volunteers and the villagers, certain renovation activities were planned with the involvement of the local community. Fruit bearing trees were planted in individual households with the help of volunteers and villagers. Individual toilets were built for those families which belong to backward communities. The toilets were built with the involvement of the families in the physical work.

Other inter cultural activities include a visit to temples in Kancheepuram; screening of a Bollywood movie; a visit to Chennai city; Indian traditional music and dance performance; Team building and intercultural activities between local university students and volunteers.



Happy Move Camp – Medical and Health and Hygiene Team

The Medical and Health and Hygiene Team for the 1st Batch has about 50 Koran volunteers and 10 Korean doctors and medical specialists who will be responsible for conducting Medical camps in some of the selected schools, villages, Primary Healthcare Centers and Sub Centers of Sriperumbudur and Kanchipuram. A 50 member health and hygiene awareness team is responsible for promoting healthy community living habits and awareness on communicable diseases to the school children of the surrounding areas of the hospitals. Approximately 2500 to 3500 villagers benefit through the Medical Camps conducted.

Some of the topics covered in the Hygiene awareness sessions that are conducted in the schools through creative learning methods include: First Aid; Tuberculosis / Typhoid and Cholera awareness; the importance of brushing teeth / washing hands and drinking boiled water; smoking hazards; menstrual hygiene; Physical exercise; water borne diseases; environmental education.

Happy Move Camp – Education and Renovation Team

The Education and Renovation Team for the 1st batch has about 75 Korean volunteers who will stay for a duration of 2 weeks. The visiting volunteers will take up education and renovation works in the Government schools and villages.

The Education team is responsible for conducting teaching sessions for the school children related to basic English and Mathematics, Environmental awareness, Health and Hygiene awareness. Creative learning methods are used to conduct the sessions, through art, drawing, games, music, dance, flash cards and charts etc.

This year we decided to include some of the renovation activities from our “Model Village Project” in Chennai. Examples are, building toilets for backward communities ; promoting Kitchen gardens in schools ; planting fruit bearing tress in houses.

The Renovation activities that are carried out include:

Constructing Play courts, Building and Repairing Toilets, Kitchens, Water Storage, Water Connections, Planting Trees, Building School Compound wall, Building Book shelves, Kitchen Gardens, Libraries in schools, Floor tiles in classrooms, Painting, Constructing Children’s Park, Promoting Rain Water Harvesting, Clean Kitchen program etc. In addition, the volunteers also provided school materials such as school uniforms, notebooks, sports kit, pencils, crayons, drawing material, mats etc.

5th Happy Move Global Youth Volunteers Camp in Chennai

The “5th Happy Move Camp” started on the 16th of July in Chennai. A total of 250 Korean volunteers will arrive in 2 batches of 125 volunteers each, along with a group of 20 Korean doctors. Each batch stays for a period of 2 weeks.

1 st Batch – 16 th July to 28 th July – 125 volunteers and 10 doctors

2 nd Batch – 30 th July to 11 th August – 125 volunteers and 10 doctors

The “Happy Move Global Youth Volunteers” Camp is a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiative sponsored by HMC Korea (Hyundai Motor Company) and supported by FSL-India (Field Services and Intercultural Learning), IWO Korea (International Workcamp Organization) and HMI (Hyundai Motors India). The 1st Happy Move Camp was conducted in July 2008 and is held every six months.

Under the “Happy Move Global Youth Volunteers” programme, HMC Korea selects a total of 250 college student volunteers who will participate in organising medical camps and health awareness campaigns, as well as education and renovation work in schools and villages. The programme is held over 30 days in areas of Kanchipuram District, Chennai.

Our best wishes are with the FSL-India Chennai Staff in making the 5th Happy Move Camp a bigger success.

Country Presentation In ROTARACT CLUB

Rotaract club of Kundapur has invited workcamp volunteers on 15th Of July 2010. The volunteers from South Korea, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and France were participated and presented their countries to all the participants. The members of the Rotaract club and FSL-India has participated and came to know the information about the different countries. The event was followed by the dinner. Overall, from this event it was possible for the volunteers and club members to interact with each other.

Monsoon Work Camp – Kundapur

5 Volunteers from South Korea, Switzerland, Canada and Finland actively participated in the Social/Kids, two weeks work camp held in Vagjyothi Special School and Ashrama School in Kundapur. In the first week they planted different kinds of trees around the play ground at Vagjyothi School. The second week was occupied with painting dormitory wall at Ashrama school. During their 2 week stay in Kundapura, they had great time by attending weddings, visiting temples, tiles factory and other interesting places around Kundapura.

The camp was lead by FSL India work camp coordinator Daya Salins and team leader Dinesh Sarang.

Place: Bangalore                   Theme: Social/Kids

Dates: April 5 to 18 (2 weeks)

Team leaders: Mr.Goutham and Mr. Indu Shekar

This workcamp was conducted in an organization called FPA India (Fulfilling People’s Aspirations). The volunteers worked in an informal school run by FPA.  The volunteers conducted talent competitions like fancy dress competition, dance completion, singing competition, drawing competition and also involved the children in creative work like clay modelling. Total numbers of children in the school are 40. (Boys-15, Girls-25) The children are between 8 to 14 years of age.

The volunteers also did some renovation work in the hospital and schools. They painted the benches and tables in the hospital, painted educational charts on the walls to promote- awareness of health and Hygiene, family planning, and awareness of our environment.

The volunteers did a country presentation for the children so that they could learn a few aspects about other cultures.The 9 volunteers were from Germany, USA, Belgium and Canada.

Place: Kodaikanal                  Theme: Kids/Environment

Dates: April 12 to 25 (2 weeks)

In the first week volunteers worked in an organization called TEAM Vision. The volunteers painted the rooms, repaired the roof and compound walls of the hostel. They performed a play about health and hygiene awareness to the children and also taught them general knowledge through games. The volunteers conducted Talent competitions like – singing competition, drawing competition and sport to the children. There were 90 children and their age group are 5 to 13 years. They have done handcraft work and “Happy Hearts” activities with children

The volunteers did a country presentation for the children as part of the Intercultural exchaneg. The volunteers were from – Germany, USA, France, Spain and Italy.In the second week of the camp, weworked in R.C Primary school, Pallangi Konbe. The volunteers painted classrooms, blackboards and outside walls of the school. Also planted trees in the school compound. They helped the kitchen women in cooking food for the children.  They visited the tribal Village and distributed some pens, pencils, pencil boxes to the children and also visited a coffee plantation and temples.

The last nest of this year’s sea turtle successfully hatched at Bijadi Hatchery.

This morning(30th March) the last nest relocated in this nesting season hatched and we could see lot of baby turtles tracks heading towards the sea. Beginning of the season was challenging for the sea turtle project because some nests failed completely/partially because of early nesting and heavy rainfall between end of September and mid October.
This year our dedicated team of 6 long term volunteers (Marie, Katherina, Stephanie, Tobias, Yasmine and Naho) along with 21 work campers and 12 local contact persons worked very hard to make every fishermen families aware of the sea turtle conservation and importance of Sea turtles for the Eco system.

The volunteers renovated a school in this camp, they painted the walls. They also taught basic English like alphabets, numbers,… and songs to the children. They played with the children and did some activities with them.

The volunteers painted a school. They painted also two class rooms compound of educational charts. The volunteers taught new games to the children, the hygienic, basic English, drawing… The volunteers were able to visit local house people. It was a great cultural exchange !

The volunteers renovated a  school, they cleaned the floor, painted walls with educational charts and also benches. They taught to the children basic English. In the last week, all the volunteers had a trek, It was the occasion for them to visit temples.
