There’s a New Kid in Town!

FSL-India has great news from CEL, Kundapur – our goat, called Rani, which means Queen in Kannada (the local language spoken here) has had a little female baby!

Everything happened last night, when we heard Rani crying, which does not happen at all in the night. When Gopal, our security man, went to check what was going on, we found out the beautiful news.

It is really exciting to have a new member in our CEL family. However, she requires quite a lot of help and care now. She is really cute and everyone is happy to have her here.

But, do you know why we have a goat at our centre? How does it contribute to our sustainable agriculture project? How does it help us to be sustainable?

These are some of the reasons to have a goat in an organic farm…

Basically, it will provide us with milk, which is healthier than cow’s milk. Apart from that, goats provide us with powerful fertilizing dung, which can be utilized at our farm for the trees straight away, or in our compost tank. Furthermore, a goat can eat nearly everything, in the sense of organic waste. Let’s say we have excess of weeds from the garden, too much of vegetable peels to pour in the compost tank or too much biomass coming from the pruning of the mango trees. What can we do with so much green waste? Goats will be happy to eat it!

If you want to learn and experience more, do not hesitate to join us. A farm requires loads of work, and an extra hand is always helpful here!

By the way, we are still searching for a name for our ‘little princess’! Please let us know your suggestions!

Hope to hear from you soon.
