Raising awareness, breaking cultural barriers, conserving sea turtles

For the first time in FSL –  India’s history, more than 250 participants, including children, teachers, local community members of Kundapur and FSL staff came together for an awareness raising initiative of a different kind. In March of 2013, we held a drawing competition to highlight the importance and challenges of conserving sea turtles for future generations. Children were given various themes and topics for illustration, such as, the dangers sea turtles face, their life cycle etc.

Community Participation in Mural Painting at Parampalli School In December 2012, the work camp on Sea Turtle Conservation ensured participation of local community in each and every activity to build ownership of the project. During the work camp at Kundapur, awareness on Sea-Turtle Conservation was undertaken through several innovative ways. Puppet show is one such innovative way which motivated international volunteers and the community because of unique way of awareness creation. It was on 16th of November Kundapur tent school children had an excursion to beach and temple with FSL-India volunteers and teachers. A total 8 children from Kundapur tent school teachers and volunteers visited Marvante beach and Hattiangadi Vinayaka temple. FSL-India Mainstream the Tent School Children

FSL-India has been running a Tent Schools in and around Kundapur under Home Based Project. Tent Schools were initiated with a view to catering to the educational needs of children from the migrant community who come to Kundapur in search of jobs and livelihood opportunities.  Many children from migrant community of Tamil Nadu working in Heskatturu village near Kundapur dropped out. However, the Tent School of FSL-India came as boon for them to continue their studies.

Under Home Based Project (HBP) initiative, FSL-India started Tent Schools at Kundapur. Kundapur has been experiencing constant influx of migrants from north Karnataka. The migrant community lives in and around Kundapur Taluk. They come here on temporary basis in search of jobs and livelihoods opportunities. These families set up tents as their temporary homes.
