FSL’s work camps usually last between 2 to 3 weeks and are held across India in some of the most historically significant and culturally vibrant parts of the country. The month of September saw 4 work camps being held across 3 Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh. Take a look at just some of the things we got up to in our work camps.
Health on Stage Team leader: Deepak, Bharathi The “Health on Stage” workcamp is a unique model that attempts to involve young international volunteers and engage them in intensive dialogue with local community by using “forum theatre” as the medium for communication. Yoga in God’s own country Team Leaders: Rahul and Raghavan Kerala, known more often as ‘God’s own country’, is famous for its beautiful backwaters and lush greenery. Volunteers to the camp divide their day between activities at the Marine Special School in the mornings and yoga and ayurveda classes in the evenings. Teaching rural children: work camp in March We recently hosted a work camp in Kodagu, a South Western District in the Indian State of Karnataka, where volunteers were involved in teaching close to 130 children in Milinda Vidhya Samsthe School, for Tribal community children various environment-related topics. The project also provided the volunteers with an opportunity for intercultural learning. Yoga / Ayurveda / Culture (Kerala – 10th to 30th September-2012) Number of Volunteers: 7 Camp Activities: The highlights of the Camp were the rejuvenating Yoga classes and the enlightening Ayurveda Classes. These were held in the evenings. In the morning volunteers were engaged with the children activities at the Dayaniketan Orphanage at Bakkalam.
Yoga / Ayurveda / Culture (Kerala – 6th to 26th August -2012) Number of Volunteers: 19 Camp Activities: Volunteers attended Yoga Class every day from 4.30 to 6.30 p.m. They were also involved with painting and conducting games with the children in Special school. We will always remember those three wonderful weeks we spent in India! After two weeks in Mysore the HOS team left for Bangalore with their luggage. Most of the group members were very curious to travel by Indian Train and enjoyed the journey a lot. Rain, traffic jam, humans, cars, rickshaws and animals on the same road in a very chaotic traffic. During the second week we could implement all the theory about forum theatre that we learned. All the training we have undergone with Chakrapani & Team dancing and acting helped us feel more confident with the performance we had to do in slums, a village and in a school.
