  • STV – Short Term Volunteering (Work camps)

    What is STV?
The short term volunteer or work camps as we at FSL-India call it is indeed a unique opportunity for people from different countries, backgrounds and cultures to come together and work with local communities for a period between 1 to 3 weeks. Over the years FSL –India has organized several work camps in different parts of the country. We welcome anyone who is interested to participate in our work camps. Most of our camps do not require any specific skills but applicants need to show an interest towards development activities. Open-mindedness, being flexible and creative and showing a commitment towards the work is what we expect from our volunteers.

    Our areas of work
In various locations across India, FSL-India has organized several work camps in collaboration with our strategic partners. These work camps are conducted with special topics, which are distinctive from the regular work that we do in other locations. The projects are planned with a long-term sustainable goal and therefore involve works that are intended to change the lives of many people who deserve special care and attention. FSL-India conducts these work camps in order to facilitate further improvement and to go an extra mile which enables maintaining a stronger relationship with its local partners. Our work camps help us deliver extra support to the communities and break down barriers between people. Although the duration is short you will be working intensely with the local community, develop intercultural understanding and provide support to build a culture of peace among people. You will develop meaningful relationships with the locals, convey a level of cultural insight and leave behind a lasting impression which is not possible for tourists to achieve.

  • YDP – Youth Development Program

    What is YDP?
The YDP wing of FSL – India was started with an objective to train, empower and promote leadership among youths through non-formal education, vocational education, service learning and local youth chapters. Today, this wing is entirely run and managed by young enthusiastic youths who work together in various development projects.

The YDP aims at the empowerment of Indian youth through:
    • capacity building of their soft and hard skills
    • development initiatives which positively impact their socio-economic and cultural realities
    • increased participation in self and community development through the youth-led local chapters
    Why YDP?
The YDP of FSL – India was started with an objective to train, empower and promote leadership among youth through non-formal education, vocational education, service learning and local youth chapters. Today, this program is entirely run and managed by young enthusiastic youth who work together in various development projects through the facilitation FSL-India.

    Why YDP?
"Young people should be at the forefront of global change and innovation. Empowered, they can be key agents for development and peace. If, however, they are left on society's margins, all of us will be impoverished. Let us ensure that all young people have every opportunity to participate fully in the lives of their societies." – Kofi Annan, Former Secretary General, United Nations

This quote by Kofi Annan, the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations sums up broadly the focus of our YDP. In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections, 150 million people who were within the age group of 18 to 23 were eligible to vote. The current youth demographic figures of India show that 65% of India’s population is 35 or under, and half the country's population of 1.25 billion people is under 25 years of age. According to the Election Commission of India, as of 1 January 2014, more than 42,000 voters between the ages of 18 and 19 were registered.

To ensure a bright future for the nation, we need to strengthen, empower and prepare our youth for tomorrow. FSL – India is committed to contribute, tap and harness our share in this future potential energy. The five developmental areas identified by Forum for Youth Investment, 2001 are working, learning, thriving, connecting, and leading (Ferber, Pittman, & Marshall, 2002). The initiatives and programs of YDP are in fact processes chiefly focused on helping youth achieve positive outcomes in all five of these development areas. Imagine the sea change empowered youth can bring together in the path of nation building!!!

  • HBP – Home Based Project

    What is HBP?
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Providing basic human needs, protecting our technological resources, contributing to agricultural necessity, conserving our bio-diversity, controlling climate change and providing financial stability are considered the most effective ways of ensuring a sustainable future. All our programs and initiatives in one way or another are contributing to sustainable development.

Apart from our regular programs over the years, FSL-India has been implementing several self-funded projects called "Home Based Projects". The aim of these home based projects is to promote participation in local communities to achieve sustainable development.

    Areas of Work
The ongoing home based projects are - Sea turtle conservation, Environmental education, Tent schools, Eco-clubs and Sustainable agriculture.

    Impacts
The impact FSL – India’s these initiatives have made in the lives of the local community and the environment has been very encouraging.

Three species of the protected Sea turtles are nesting on India’s west coast and all of them are endangered species and increasing threats caused by humans could drive them to extinction. The sea turtles were once slaughtered for their meat, eggs, skin and shells and were also victims of habitat destruction and poaching. Since the year 2006, FSL-India has been running the Sea turtle conservation program and the effects can be seen in the remarkable difference the program has created in conservation of these species. Today, together with the support of the local community FSL – India is committed to protecting these marine wonders and reducing their decline. Environmental education and initiatives like Eco-clubs are ideal ways to educate local communities on the economic and social benefits of environmental protection and conservation of nature and natural resources. Through our various education and awareness drives, we have managed to create a significant impact and brought the local communities together to build successful strategies for management of the local environment.

The Tent school is one among the most successful initiatives at FSL – India with a focus to giving the children living in the streets mostly from the migrant communities, a chance to live a decent life through the help of education. In the past few years, after providing basic education through tent schools - we have helped many such children return to regular schools, prevented child labour and educated and motivated migrant labor families on the importance of education. We still have a lot more to achieve and efforts from the government and other NGO’s alike have to go in before we can see an exceptional impact in the lives of these children. Until 2015 we have achieved enrolling 172 migrant children to regular schools.

The degradation of natural resources is a major concern as it severely impacts the livelihoods of poor and backward communities in rural areas. Against this backdrop, sustainable agriculture is one of the most effective ways to respond to the challenges of the rural community. It is the act of farming based on an understanding of the ecosystem which can lead to both economic and ecological sustainability. SAP-K (Sustainable Agriculture Program, Kundapur) is a newborn program of FSL-India that has already made a powerful entry and started planting seeds of change towards sustainable development. With the help of national and international volunteers and together with the local community we have initiated many activities like - demonstrating sustainable agricultural practices to the farming community, evolving a model for sustainable livelihood, constructing different soil and water harvesting structures, segregation and recycling of waste, planning and designing different tiers of vegetable/floral gardens, exploring, planning and implementing different animal components such as fishery, sheep, cow and poultry rearing and many more.
