{"id":7148,"date":"2014-04-03T15:55:59","date_gmt":"2014-04-03T10:25:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/?p=7148"},"modified":"2014-04-03T15:55:59","modified_gmt":"2014-04-03T10:25:59","slug":"first-steps-of-a-long-journey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/first-steps-of-a-long-journey\/","title":{"rendered":"First steps of a long journey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 On the 10th of March 2014 our hopes finally came true.\u00a0The first <strong>Olive Ridley sea-turtles<\/strong> of this season hatched in our hatchery in <strong>Maravanthe, Kundapura.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Nearly two months after their mother came ashore to lay her eggs, <b>seventeen<\/b> little babies made their way through the eggshell out of the nest. With the support of the<strong> Forest Department<\/strong>, our <strong>Home Based Project<\/strong> team released them a few meters before the sea to give them a \u00a0chance to imprint on their natal beach, and guarded them as they crawled straight into the ocean. But these were just the <strong>first steps of a long journey<\/strong> full of threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a style=\"text-align: justify\" href=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/2014\/04\/first-steps-of-a-long-journey\/olympus-digital-camera-154\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7150\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7150 aligncenter\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/P3080466-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0Little is known about the first years of sea-turtles. Once they reach the ocean, they get into a so-called swim-frenzy; swimming against the waves until they arrive in the open sea. They spend their first years in a variety of foraging habitats, <strong>threatened essentially by pollution and deep-sea fishing<\/strong>. Many feed on garbage, mistaking it with food or get caught in fishnets and die. The survivors travel long distances from their feeding to their breeding grounds.
