{"id":16396,"date":"2019-06-18T14:00:57","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T08:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/?p=16396"},"modified":"2019-06-19T10:04:36","modified_gmt":"2019-06-19T04:34:36","slug":"eco-brick-bench-at-fsl-indias-cel-a-case-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/eco-brick-bench-at-fsl-indias-cel-a-case-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Eco Brick Bench at FSL-India\u2019s CEL! &#8211; A Case Study"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In March 2019, FSL-India\u2019s volunteers at the Centre for\nExperiential Living, Kundapur started to build an Eco Bench. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Before-ECO-Bench-e1560841858573.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16399\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastic was collected from nearby shops and local people in\norder to reuse it for the Eco Bricks. The Eco Brick is a plastic bottle filled with\naround 300 grams of plastic garbage (milk\/snacks packets, plastic bags,\nchips\/candy and cookie wrappers, etc), in order to be strong and solid as a\nbrick. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"525\" height=\"700\" src=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/During-Work.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/During-Work.jpg 525w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/During-Work-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/During-Work-203x270.jpg 203w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of filling the Eco Bricks started with the work\nof the previous volunteers, as well as with the help of the students from FSL-India\u2019s\nWinter Camp. Indeed, with a lot of help and contribution, at FSL-India\u2019s CEL,\nmore than 100 Eco bricks have been stored from last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, the present CEL volunteers refilled the remaining\nplastic bottles with plastic trash, in order to create an additional 45 eco\nbricks, to complete the Eco Bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Eco-Bricks-Measurement-e1560841715899.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16397\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To start the construction of the Eco Bench, FSL-India got some\nclay from the nearby Tile Factory. When the clay was wet enough to start using\nit, the volunteers started to mix it together with water and paddy bran (rice husks),\nto create a good and right mixture to hold the Eco Bricks together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Construction-work-e1560841942464.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16400\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The basis of the bench was cement and on the top of it, the\nvolunteers started to put the bottles in the shape of a half-moon. Every layer\nof eco bricks needed a lot of clay, so the volunteers were separated into 2\ngroups: &nbsp;one group built the bench and\nthe other one mixed and stamped the clay together. The surface of the clay was\nalso plastered in order to create a smooth layer. The Eco Brick system is also shown to the children during the camps and at schools, as well as to the locals and to the people visiting the Centre, in order to create awareness for better reuse and recycling of plastic waste.
