GHNP is a relatively recent addition to a network of protected areas in northern India and adjacent countries, which increasingly provide protection to the Himalayas.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13978 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2017-09-03-13-44-11-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2017-09-03-13-44-11-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2017-09-03-13-44-11-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2017-09-03-13-44-11-203x270.jpg 203w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/2017-09-03-13-44-11.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Himalayas, as a whole, are listed as one of Conservation International\u2019s 34 major biodiversity hotspots. The Himalayan Hotspot contains not only the world\u2019s highest mountains and associated alpine ecosystems but also large expanses of lower-elevation temperate and subtropical forests and grasslands. It spans 3,000 km, from east to west, and 300 kms to 500 kms from north to south.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GHNP was awarded the UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2014, in recognition of its outstanding contribution towards biodiversity conservation. The park protects over 1,000 plant species, including many medicinal herbs, 31 species of mammals and 209 species of birds, as well as amphibians, reptiles, and insects.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-13988 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nature-valley-e1545816268990-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nature-valley-e1545816268990-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nature-valley-e1545816268990-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nature-valley-e1545816268990-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nature-valley-e1545816268990-360x270.jpg 360w, https:\/\/fsl-india.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/nature-valley-e1545816268990.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4 of GHNP\u2019s species of mammals and 3 of its species of birds are globally threatened; including the musk deer and the western Tragopan, locally known as a Jujurana and considered as the state bird of Himachal Pradesh. It is famous for wooden carved, Nepali style, pagoda structured temples. Shangchul Mahadev Temple is a famous temple in the zone of Sainj valley at the highest range (2300 altitude) at the top of the mountain valley.
