World Water Day Observed at Pennalur in Kancheepuram District

110International World Water Day is observed annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day. Each year, World Water Day highlights a specific aspect of freshwater.


35To mark this occasion FSL India on 17th March 2012 observed World Water Day at Pennalur village in Kancheepuram District. The event was organised in collaboration with village president, ward members, teachers, school children and the local community. A total of 105 people participated in this event to create awareness on the benefit and importance of fresh water resources.


In an attempt to educate the community people on water issues, FSL India team of Chennai highlighted on the significance of observing World Water Day. The school children and teachers participated in educating the village community on proper use of water, how to ensure food and water security and encouraged them to take care of the fresh water resources. It was emphasized that community based management committee must be constituted to manage the fresh water resources and take community action to protect water from pollution.


27To have a greater impact on the community all the community leaders, teachers and school children participated in a rally around the village emphasizing the need for conservation of water resources. During the rally community people were also educated on the judicious use of water, promotion of rain water harvesting, planting of trees, promotion of environment, refrain from open defecation and safe disposal of human waste, treatment and recycling of waste water, solid waste management, sock pit construction, recharging the ground water, promotion of kitchen garden etc. FSL India also gave away prizes to school children for their active participation in creating awareness on water issues.
