Winter Camp at Sevalaya in Chennai

FSL-India organized Winter Camp at Sevalaya, Chennai for duration of two

weeks from 9th to 19th October 2012. There were 18 German volunteers in

the camp who participated in various activities such as construction of pathway from the entrance to main school building which is 140 meters. They painted 24 Black Boards at Sevalaya and drew pictures of vegetables, animals and flowers in three kindergartens.

 

Volunteers also participated in agriculture activities such as kitchen garden, banana plantation and cleaning work. General Cleaning Day was observed with the participation of school children.

 

Cultural Evening: Every day in the evening FSL-India and Sevalaya team organised cultural program. The participants were split into three groups and each group was assigned with specific activities such as home visit, interaction with old age people and taught sports and games to hostel children. Volunteers also participated in performing traditional dances (Karangattam, Kolattam and classical dance) along with the local people. FSL-India team organised valedictory function in honour of the

volunteers and proposed vote of thanks to the volunteers for making the program an eventful one.

 

Feedback from the Beneficiary: Through the Pathway Work designed and

prepared by the volunteers, the local community is immensely benefited. School children, teachers, parents and elderly people are happy to make use of the pathway. The local beneficiary community has expressed its appreciation for this work.

 

Teaching in the school: During the camp the German volunteers were engaged in teaching to the children at the kindergarten. About 250 children within the age group of 6 to 11 years old greatly benefited from the teaching activities. Volunteers have taught the children spoken English, rhymes, sports and drawing. Volunteers also did the painting work in the class rooms and drew pictures of varieties of vegetables, fruits, cartoons and undertook the painting of black boards.

 

Agricultural work: All the volunteers worked together in the agricultural field especially in the Kitchen Garden.  They planted the seedling such as are tomato, bitter guard, spinach, drumstick, radish, beans etc. They also cleaned the garden of banana plantation. World cleaning day was observed with the local community by organising mass cleaning activity. About 1300 community people participated in the world cleaning day at Sevalaya. Premises such as old age home, staff quarters, school building, girls hostel and administration office were cleaned.

 

Mr. Murali the founder of organization was extreemly happy to witness the good works of the volunteers. On behalf of the organisation he extended gratitude and with all appreciative not he proposed vote of thanks to the German volunteers and FSL-India team such as Mr. Vasantha Raja and Ms. Rubini. Indeed the summer was a big success.
