Volunteering in Germany – Tamizhselvam Velmurugan

I am Thamizhselvam Velmurugan working as a volunteer at the German Red Cross, Billerbeck.

I arrived in Germany on 21st November, at Frankfurt main airport. It was also my first journey by flight. When we arrived at the airport, 2 GRC volunteers were waiting for us and volunteers from other countries also arrived at that time. All of us went to Munster for 10 days, to attend a seminar.

The whole seminar session was good, all the topics were new to me and I learned more new skills, how to travel in Germany and  shopping methods . My first week in Germany had the most learning, and was a turning point in my life.  I was homesick and at that time, my new friends motivated me and they gave me a lot of self confidence.

After 10 days, my Team Leader, Lisa Steens came to take me to Billerbeck and she showed me our apartment and working place. 3rd December was my first working day – new colleagues, I met new people, it was a good and new experience for me. They all accepted me very well and they are taking care of me. The climate is totally different to India, it’s a new place, very cold and I saw snow for the first time.

I am staying in an apartment near my work place, 650 metres distance, with 2 other volunteers from Tanzania.

I am working as a care giver at Haus Baumgarten, where 24 people live. My role at my work place is to go for walks with the people from Haus Baumgarten, take them shopping and help the cook.

Thank you, FSL-India for giving me this wonderful opportunity to explore a new country, meet new people and develop my personality and skills.
