Transforming the Tent School

Transforming the Tent School

I’m Sophie von Rohden, a 19 year old volunteer from Germany. I have started as a volunteer at FSL India’s Tent School project in the month of September 2019, at Baikady Tent community.

In the beginning, there were around 7 children who were coming more or less regularly to the Tent School. Right now, there are 5 children who are regularly coming.

Sharavathi, who is a teacher and I started with teaching the English alphabet as well as numbers and simple English questions. Sharavathi also started to teach the Kannada letters and writing. I am also involved in teaching every day a short lesson in discipline and hygiene,  such as cutting their nails, brushing their teeth and washing their faces, hands and feet.

We established one drawing lesson per week, which will take place every Friday. The children can get creative and learn necessary motor skills.

In September, we put the FSL India initiated project of painting the walls of the Tent School into execution. Where grey metal walls were before, are now, thanks to the great help of many volunteers, beautiful, colourful walls that make the School look a lot more inviting.

FSL India was also able to provide school uniforms for the Tent School children, which we have distributed to them. They seemed really excited about it.
