Sea turtle conservation- Stakeholder’s workshop

On Monday, 20th July, the Sea Turtle Conservation project of FSL India (STC) organized a  Workshop in the Shettrakatte training center. Since the rough sea during the monsoon season washed ashore already several sea turtles, all with more or less severe injuries, this time the meeting was focused on injured turtles and how to treat them.1507-stc-meeting-341507-stc-meeting-27

Therefore different stakeholders in sea turtle conservation like the Forest Department, fishermen working as Contact Persons, a veterinary and the STC Team actively participated in the meeting to share knowledge and strengthen the conservation network.

Joint Director of FSL-India Mr. Doreswamy guided through this successful meeting. Program started with introduction of participants. Later the presentation of FSL-India and sea turtle project , veterinary consultant Mr. Gaurish Padukone shared his knowledge about sea turtle diseases and injuries and what can be done for rescue and rehabilitation work. Additionally he presented a rescue action plan regarding wounded turtles.  Following DFO Mr. Prakash S. Netalkar talked about the increasing threats to sea turtles and nesting sites and the Contact persons mentioned different problem like speed boat fishing, catching sea turtles in the nets. The installation of a permanent rescue center and a sea turtle help line was discussed, as well as the organization of an upcoming workshop for fishermen and forest department officers regarding handling of sea turtle nests.  During the workshop 31 were participated including Forest department DFO & officials, Sea-turtle contact persons, FSL-India volunteers and staff. All in all its an good initiation in Sea-turtle project.
