Sea-turtle conservation Awareness at Uppunda

HBP team organized Sea-turtle Conservation (STC) Work camp from 10th to 21st November-2014. This is the 2nd work-camp of the Sea Turtle Conservation Project, which took place in Uppunda-Madikal village. Despite of only one volunteer from France arriving for the work-camp, the two weeks of raising awareness about sea turtles was a great success.

After getting an introduction into the Sea Turtle Conservation Project and about the work of the Sustainable Agriculture Project (SAP) the work-camp participant, including the volunteers of the SAP, conducted all awareness activities in Uppund-Madikal. First day, we started with weaving coconut leaves which were used for building the Turtle Information Centre (TIC), during camp the HBP team and the volunteers have conducted session in the Uppunda-Madikal School, during the session we gave information about sea turtle species, their life-cycle and threats to them. After the session we conducted quiz competition to measure information level of children.   It was really nice to see that the school children gave the right answer to nearly every question. During camp in Training centre we made 4 Trenches, which help to speculate the water and help to improve ground water level.

During camp we also made mural painting related to marine life and saving the sea turtles in a prominent location at Uppunda. Conducted STC puppet show to the school children, the puppet show gave an overview about threats to sea turtles in an easy way to understand. After the puppet show was successfully presented, the school children joined the work-camp team to beach walk through the village of Uppunda to raise awareness by raising the slogans, singing songs and distributing flyers about the sea turtle conservation, which was a great pleasure and a very nice final event of the work-camp and helped us to spared awareness by rally nearly 100 community people participated.
