LTV’s Cultural Event at Pondicherry – May 2019

On 21st May 2019, FSL-India’s Pondicherry coordinator organised a Cultural Event (CE) for our regular LTV volunteers. Every month, we organise a cultural event for our regular volunteers and we take them to any cultural and historical places which are located in and around Pondicherry. This month, the Cultural Event was focused on Indian Cooking.

Tamil Indian Cooking: A typical Tamil meal consists of many spicy and non-spicy dishes. Many of these dishes are generally mixed and eaten with steamed rice, which is the staple food of the region. Except for Brahmins and a couple of non-Brahmin castes, most Tamilians eat non-vegetarian food. However, on a typical day, a Tamil family will eat mostly vegetarian food, and the intake of meat is lower than in most parts of the world.

In the morning, FSL-India’s coordinator and the volunteers started their travel from the meeting point to the place of the cultural event.  In the beginning, the Coordinator explained about the activities. Then, she took 5 volunteers to an Indian family and prepared different dishes like Steamed Rice, Mixed Vegetable Sambar, Poriyal, Paruppu, Rasam, Appalam, Bajji, Kesari and Thayir. After the visit, our FSL-India coordinator and volunteers discussed about their experience in the host family and project.

Some feedback on our Cultural Event:

  • Really good
  • Very good to be in a Joint Family
  • First time saw a Joint family in India
  • More interesting to know about very good South Indian Food
  • Nice to know how to make Sweet and Bajji
  • Very good cultural experience
