LTV Cultural Event at Mysore, February 2019

In the month of February 2019, FSL-India’s LTV Cultural Visit was held on 14th and 15th February 2019, with 1 volunteer, at Mysore. We took Victoria, our volunteer from Denmark to Mysore which is known as Karnataka’s Cultural City. We visited cultural and historical places which are located in and around Mysore. This month, the cultural visit was focused on an actual cultural experience.

In the morning, the FSL-India group started their travel from the Mysore accommodation to Amba Vilas Palace. Our volunteer very much enjoyed watching the architectural style of domes of the palace, commonly described as Indo-Saracenic, with blends of the Hindu, Mughal, Rajput and Gothic styles. It is a three-story stone structure, with marble domes, and has a 145-foot five-story tower. The palace is surrounded by a large garden.

After the visit to the palace, we had a South Indian traditional lunch on a banana leaf. After lunch, we visited Devaraja Market which is a popular tourist destination of Mysore because of the strong local flavor of the shopping experience there. The city authorities have built a spacious plaza in front of the market, which becomes quite crowded in the evenings. It is huge market for the wholesaler and our volunteer bought some fancy outfits from the boutique and enjoyed a lot to see all kinds of fruits, flowers, groceries and vegetables available at one place. The locals refer to this market as the Open Super Market.

The second day was very devotional because we visited Chamundi temple at Chamundi hill. Spent 1 hour to reach the main shrine of the temple and our volunteer liked the customs followed near Goddess Chamundi at the main shrine.

Afterwards, we visited Nandi Temple (Big Bull), walked some steps down – nearly 1.5 Km  and on the way, saw some pilgrims following the tradition of applying tilak all over the steps and walking towards the temple, and finally visited Mysore Mall. Our volunteer bought some traditional clothes at Mysore Mall. Totally, it was a nice sightseeing trip.

Victoria says:

I really enjoyed the cultural day. The Open Market is very unique and I had a nice time over there. It is nice to see the old heritage city and nice palace. The food was so amazing and I really like non-vegetarian food. Totally loved the 2-day visit at Mysore.
