Intoducing Azolla to the Rural Community

Intoducing Azolla to the Rural Community

On Friday, the 11th of January 2019, all the volunteers of  FSL-India’s Home base Projects -Sustainable Agriculture, Environment Education as well as  the Youth Development, joined together to build an Azolla pool.

Azolla is a water plant that lives on the surface of the water, and is able to reproduce very quickly, even under changing or challenging circumstances.  That, plus the fact that Azolla is very rich in protein and other nutrients makes it a perfect plant to grow when you have livestock like chicken or cows.

That’s why the FSL-India team and a family from the rural village Mavinakatte agreed that the team would build a pool and provide some Azolla plants to start the cultivation.

Once the Azolla gets into the new habitat, it starts growing and spreading instantly and you can see progress in just a few days.

The family welcomed the FSL-India team very heartily and watched the volunteers closely during their work in the garden of the family. After the team finished the work in the gaden, the family thanked the team and invited them into the house for juice and snacks.

Concluding, we would state that this Azolla cultivation event was very succesful in helping the local community, as well as strenghtening the relationship between FSL-India and the local people.
