FSL-India’s role in Sea Turtle conservation – S Janardhana Maravanthe, ex-President, Maravanthe Panchayat

FSL-India has been working for the conservation of Olive Riddley and Green sea turtles, which are considered to be an endangered species. In the past, whenever the local fishermen came across the sea turtle eggs, they used to collect them, cook and eat them. They did not know the importance of conservation of the sea turtles.

After the intervention of FSL-India, the fisherman community got an awareness of the need for the conservation of the sea turtles. They joined hands with FSL-India’s volunteers in collecting and preserving the eggs till they hatched, and ultimately released them into the sea.

FSL-india has been doing a very great service in the cause of the preservation of that endangered species (Olive Riddley), not only by convserving them, but also by creating a much needed awareness among the fisherfolk of this area, as well as the schoolchildren.

They usually visit schools, talk to the children and tell them about the importance of conservation of the sea turtles. They alsoo draw murals of the sea turtles in public areas to attract the attention of the children, as well as the people of that area. Keep up the good work, FSL-India!
