Buffalo Race

2010
12.16

The contest of buffaloes race is called “Kambala” a sporting race in muddy water. Coastal Karnataka is the true home of the athletic buffalo. Kambala races are held from December till March. Every weekend one could see the buffalo races in Coastal Karnataka.

Gulvady (around half an hour journey from Kundapur) Kambala has started around 150 years ago. It was followed by the ancestor of Mr. Dodmane Heriyanna Shetty. Because of some reasons it has stopped after 1970. But when ‘Dodmane’ family faced many problems they have did a “Ashtamagala at temple” (When one whole family or village get in trouble, they are performing this program which is related to spiritual and astrological believes). As a result of this, they should restart the Kambala to get rid of all the problem of the family. Family decided to organise again Kambala at Gulvady.

There are 4 families of Dodmane including village leaders and whole village people joined to start this program from 2009. Every year this is performing one fine day(which suggested by astrologer) in between November 16th to December 16. This is the entertainment program for the farmers and villagers after the hard working in their rice fields and also this is religious function also. Farmers are bringing their buffalo from different places around village.

This year FSL volunteers been audience in this Buffallo race to enjoy the unique moment to pimp in cultural insights!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Profile – Olga Nekrasova

2010
12.15

Hello my new friends! My name is Olga Nekrasova, I’m from Russia! I’m almost 26 years old – I was born in Christmas) It’s a good sign, is it? :) Moreover, I have a twin-sister younger than me for 20 min. Initially, I’m a very happy person!

I’m a journalist and I’ve been working as a journalist during my studying in university. I was working in a magazine and news-papers. But after finished the university I realized that I don’t want to be a journalist anymore. Not in my city, not in that way it is always going in our journalism.

I felt I want to know more about myself, to learn more. To work with people directly, not through news-paper, and help them and feel I can do something important for them.

So I started working in social projects, in charity projects, working as a volunteer sometime. In parallel I get a job as a PR-manager.

But it was not enough for me. I dreamed to travel, to meet new people, to learn about inter-cultural learning and non-formal education. I feel it’s a perfect opportunity to do more in future with such knowledge.

So I’m in India now:) I discover new and new sides of Indian life, culture, philosophy every day! I enjoy it a lot!

I’m waiting for to start my internship and to start explore everything around me more deep.

I want to say Thanks to Mr. Rohan and Mr. Rakesh that they took me as an intern in FSL-India! I will try to do my best! And hope can share my knowledge with others and it will useful for them :)

Thanks to all office workers for their hearty welcome and helpfulness! Hope I will not disappoint you!

Looking back to your expectations and goals, would you like to comment on your overall experience here?

  • I wanted to know the Indian culture, to live it from the inside, and i am satisfied the school, the family, Daya’s marriage where all things are makes me happy because they gave me the opportunity to know the real life in south India.
  • I enjoy of my Indian experience and I’m satisfactory of my project because i learnt about handicap and Indian life i would have people to be with other volunteers in host family.
  • Before I arrive in the ashram i was really motivated for the construction project and I had a lot of ideas or suggestions but after a few days you realize that it’s difficult to organize what you wanted, you just need to enjoy what’s happening there.
  • Was much more better and easier that what I expected.
  • Through the fact to help people, I wanted to learn more about myself and I guess I succeed, thanks to my experience in Seon ashram.
  • Its been a great that’s it.

Beach Cleaning Day

2010
12.04

17th November 2010

Since last year FSL India and the Sanitation Project in Trasi are presenting the International Beach Cleaning Day with local people and volunteers. The Nirmala Grama Samithi (Sanitation Commitee) welcomed the numerous participants to keep the beach and the park clean. At first they meet for a strengthening snack and after welcome speeches of the committee and the lions club, around 60 people started with bags and gloves to do real nature conservation. It was a really exhausting work with the heat and the big area of pollution, but also it were a good diversion for the volunteers from their daily routine and a good impression for the locals to maybe get inspired.
