Case Study: Yellappa, Baikady Tent School

Case Study: Yellappa, Baikady Tent School

My name is Yellappa. I am 12 years old.  My father Yemmannurappa is a mason and my mother Gangamma is a labourer. We live in the Baikady Tent Community. My parents came to Kundapur from Katapur to look for work some years ago. I could not attend regular school because there was no one to advise my parents on the importance of education and also, there was no school close by. So, my parents decided to send me to FSL-India’s Tent School, which is within our community’s area.

From 2014-2017, I attended the Tent School and was taught the English and Kannada alphabets, Maths, physical education, nursery rhymes, names of vegetables and how to improve my memory with memory games. I was interested in learning more, so I learnt enough to enrol in the 4th Std at Government Primary School, Aradi (Kundapur Taluk).

Here, I am studying Social Studies, Hindi, Science, Maths, Physical Education, English and Kannada. I also learnt to play cricket and throwball. My mother asks me everyday what I learnt at school today and I tell her about my day. All of us are very grateful to FSL-India for helping me in my studies.
