LTV Get Together – April 2013

Bangalore : At the Princess of Hill Stations, Kodaikanal, with a long history as a retreat and popular tourist destination, a batch of 18 volunteers and 6 FSL India staff landed at “Greenland youth Hostel & International Tourist Home” on 11th Morning and stayed until the 12th of April to conduct the Get Together (GTG) for the month of April.

On April 5th the Eco-team, visited “The English Academy” (TEA) in Kundapur. After a brief introduction of the facility, Mr. Pradeep, the man in-charge, held a session on environmental issues. Around 35 children participated in the program, interacting with the volunteers during their English class.

The Orientation week in April from 1st to the 5th of April saw 14 International volunteers. Among these 14, were 7 volunteers from AFS Germany, namely: Franziska Nathalie Aß, Jule Böhm, Katharina Huelscher, Niklas Veltmann, Christian Ronny Singer, Magda Below and Marle Kraft for a duration of 11 Months. Work camp experiences: March/April

Teaching rural children: work camp in March We recently hosted a work camp in Kodagu, a South Western District in the Indian State of Karnataka, where volunteers were involved in teaching close to 130 children in Milinda Vidhya Samsthe School, for Tribal community children various environment-related topics. The project also provided the volunteers with an opportunity for intercultural learning. This year, volunteers can be a part of up to 10 environmental projects initiated by FSL – India. Underpinning these initiatives is a strong focus on awareness raising, with volunteers reaching out to local, underdeveloped communities to highlight the socio-economic benefits of conserving their natural resources. Designed around the importance of education as a tool for conservation, our Environment Education (EE) projects require volunteers to visit schools, youth groups and colleges to initiate dialogue on environmental concerns.
