2 Volunteers Blessed by the Goddess: LTV Cultural Event at Kollur – February 2019

FSL-India’s LTV Cultural Event was held on 2nd March 2019, with 2 volunteers. Every month, we organise a cultural event for our regular volunteers, where we take them to any cultural and historical places which are located in and around Kundapur.

In the morning, we left from the meeting point and started our visit of Kollur Sri Mookambika temple with a bus journey. Historically, the temple is at least 1200 years old. We spent an hour’s time at the temple, watching all the customs and rituals inside the temple. The coordinator explained about the history of Kollur and the goddess Mookambika.

Inside the temple, there were many offerings to the god in different ways such as whispering to the Bull statue which is situated in front of Lord Shiva’s shrine. From ancient times, there is a belief that when we whisper something into the ears of the Nandi Bull, it gets communicated to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva listens to all of this and he accordingly fulfills all the wishes. Our volunteers also followed the ritual of whispering their wishes into the ear of the Nandi Bull.

After lunch, we visited the temple cow shed, spent time there and took some pictures. Then we left for Dharma Peetha, which is a Meditation Centre. We spent some time in Shakthi Peetha and enjoyed the beautiful scenery, interacted with priests at the temple and explained about the temple history and relationship with the Kollur Temple goddess. In the afternoon, we left from the temples to go back to Kundapur, where everybody could enjoy the rest of the day with the host family

Feedback from our volunteers:

Hanan, Sweden: This cultural event was fun and an interesting experience. We visited famous temples in Kollur and I think the biggest lesson from today’s trip was when we went inside the temple. It was a little different from the other temples I had visited before. Dinesh explained everything clearly, and you got the feeling of understanding it more. Then, we got the opportunity to eat in the temple. It’s amazing the things they do and how they provide food for everyone. Wow, super! However, the trip was a bit short, but still a good day trip.

Orane, France: As we visited the temple in Kollur with FSL-India, we truly experienced a part of Indian culture. We got an explanation about the temple, its history; we visited it and even ate there. This was a nice day trip.
